My Motto: If You Give Yourself a Cookie, Don't Forget the Milk. It's all about balance and choices, not deprivation!
I struggled with my weight much of my life. I went
on all sorts of diets, the first one when I was 9 years old. I remember following a 1200-calorie diet
printed on a green sheet of paper our family doctor gave me. It had 3 meals and no snacks. Right. Later I tried drinking vinegar
before meals, the Stillman diet (a predecessor of Atkins,) the Dairy
Association diet, and something called the Ayds diet candies (seriously.) And that
was all before high school.
I went to
college seeking an education in nutrition. My goal was to learn how to
help others be as healthy as they could be by learning to eat well. Secretly, I
thought it would be wonderful if I could help myself along the way, too. I
graduated with B.S. degrees in Dietetics and Community Nutrition, and then went
on to get a M.S. degree in Exercise Physiology.
After obtaining all that knowledge, don’t you think
I should have known everything I
needed to do to become healthy and svelte myself? I thought so, too. But it didn’t work that way. It was fairly easy for me to help others
learn, to motivate, guide and encourage them to achieve their wellness goals. It
was much harder when it came to helping myself achieve my own.
It took me a long time to figure out that I needed
someone else's help: someone to be my motivator, someone to be accountable to.
I needed someone to be my coach. I finally found the help I needed and
ended up more than 50 pounds lighter, healthier, more fit, and much happier. Coaching
worked. Even for me!
